View Full Version : Another SSI/Disability Question

We're applying for disability for Seraph. I don't even understand what it is. They send me money? Do I have to use the money just for medical bills for Seraph? In Utah, what is the limit for assets/resources? Do IRAs count?

Do I need to set up a separate bank account for the SSI money? Does the SSI money then count as an asset?

How often do they re-verify the info? Which information do they re-verify? Does it clash with Aflac?

They said it would take an hour to fill out the forms online. Then they asked for information from every time she's been to the hospital or doctor's office. Oh my! It took me 3 days!!

It hurt to fill out the forms. I'm usually a very optimistic person. Seraph is doing so well (for her)...but she still has major problems. It hurt so bad to focus only on the pain. I hate it.

We didn't qualify before, but my husband just quit his job and started his own firm. We basically have no income and our new insurance is awful compared to what we had. (we have Anthem now...and used to have Regence.)

can someone walk me through some of these questions? or email me racheltera@gmail.com.

Good Luck! I don't have any answers for your questions but thought I would just say good luck on the process. My husband's company is switching insurance companies and we have spent the last two day filling out paperwork, so I feel your pain!

Hey Nannette,

We had SSI for Laurie for about a year. Because my husband was in school full-time and only worked part-time, we weren't earning much money. Our monthly SSI was something like $650. We could use it on any Laurie-related expenses. We didn't have to get a separate checking or savings account or anything. Just make sure you use the money to somehow benefit your child. That was my understanding, at least. And quite honestly, I don't think they ever checked to see how we were spending the money... just on your honor, I suppose. You're supposed to mail in a copy of every single pay stub and notify them of any pay increases. I actually have the direct phone number to Laurie's caseworker - which came in handy when I needed an answer to a question. If you try to call the SSI general information number - you WILL NOT get any answers. If you don't have Seraph's case worker info, just call or email me and I'll give you our caseworker's direct line. That way you might get some answers.

I hope this is helpful. Good luck to your hubby with his new firm!

Patty
